1. UK Gambling Act 2005 reforms ‘must include redress scheme’ say solicitors

   A consumer redress scheme for gamblers who have suffered harm should be included in reforms of the Gambling Act 2005, say Leigh Day solicitors Nichola Marshall and Paula Lee.

   The lawyers, who are currently investigating possible action against collapsed football trading scheme Football Index, have responded to the Government’s call for evidence to inform the Review into the Gambling Act 2005.

   The inquiry was called after the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) investigation into online gambling said in its report last year that the 2005 Act should be overhauled to make it fit for the digital age: there should be greater regulation of the gambling industry with improved affordability checks and a ban on gambling advertising; the Gambling Commission is not fit for purpose and a new regulatory structure should include a Gambling Ombudsman.

   Nichola and Paula, both partners at Leigh Day law firm, have written to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport with evidence for Section 4 of the Gambling Act Review – Consumer Redress. One of the questions answered: Is there evidence of a need to change redress arrangements in the gambling sector?

   They said the short answer is emphatically yes, and listed case studies of clients whose lives have been torn apart having suffered gambling harm, and where it is alleged that gambling operators have been aggressive in inducing them to further loss. They are concerned that it appears that operators are not observing the licensing conditions code of practice (LCCP). Despite this, the consumers who suffer harm are left with no hope of redress to help them recover.

   Nichola and Paula say clients who try to retrieve their losses from operators are met with aggressive letters of response from operators. There is a real inequality of arms going up against a gambling operator.

   A key aspect of reform should be the creation a gambling ombudsman/statutory redress scheme to help and protect consumers who have suffered harm and loss.

   Nichola Marshall said: “A crucial part recovery for a consumer who has suffered harm from gambling is obtaining financial redress. Many individuals have suffered financial ruin, have defaulted on loans and may have been made bankrupt as a result. That is often in tandem with the collapse of marriages, relationships, loss of property and jobs. It would be very difficult if not impossible for those individuals to re-establish themselves financially without a return of monies lost. Financial compensation may go some way to restoring self-esteem and assist with obtaining closure. For some of those we represent, no amount of money will ever compensate for the loss of a loved one, but accountability is of paramount importance in such cases.”

   Paula Lee added: “Those who have approached us and who we represent, are the tip of the iceberg. Given the number of problem gamblers in the UK there must be hundreds of thousands of people whose experience is the same as those of the clients we represent. But without an ombudsman, people whose lives have been left in ruins by the effects of gambling harm have no alternative but to turn to litigation which is costly, stressful and uncertain.”

2. Evolution enters Cordish agreement for PA

   Evolution has signed an agreement with Cordish Gaming Group to deliver its Live Casino and First Person RNG-based games to players in Pennsylvania via their new gaming site PlayLive!.

3. Liverpool draw 2-2 with West Ham...3rd place, two points behind No. 1 Arsenal, who played one game less

   Liverpool FC drew 2-2 in the 35th round of the 2023/24 English Premier League (EPL) against West Ham United at London Stadium in Newham, Greater London, on the 27th (Korea time).

6. GameCo announces fundraise & distribution to expand digital casinos, esports betting

   GameCo has announced a new round of financing and strategic investment. The round was led by new investment from prominent gaming technology company Playtech and gaming investor SpringOwl Asset Management, headed by industry mainstay Jason Ader, with participation from many of GameCo’s previous investors. The capital infusion is designed to accelerate the company’s mission to provide revolutionary gaming products and experiences while driving new players and demographics to casino entertainment.

   The fundraise comes on the heels of the appointment of Adam Rosenberg as GameCo’s Chief Executive Officer, announced last week. Rosenberg will be joining GameCo full-time from Fortress Investment Group, where he has been responsible for investments made across the capital structure in the Gaming & Leisure sector globally as Managing Director and Global Head of Gaming & Leisure. He has been a Board Observer on GameCo’s Board of Directors since 2018, when affiliates of Fortress first invested in GameCo.

   Alongside the fundraise, GameCo has also entered into a long-term distribution agreement with Playtech to commercialise GameCo’s iGaming products globally. The agreement provides GameCo with immediate access to Playtech’s extensive network of hundreds of online casino brands, which will bring arcade-style gaming to the next generation of customers. Under the terms of the agreement, GameCo will have direct access to build iGaming products on Playtech’s next-generation Gaming Platform as a Service (GPAS) system and leverage Playtech’s advanced technology and extensive distribution footprint. Playtech’s GPAS technology provides GameCo with a full-featured iGaming development tool suite, which will allow GameCo to bring its unique genre of arcade-style games to regulated online gaming markets worldwide.

   While the pandemic created significant challenges for the entire land-based casino industry, GameCo channeled its resources during the 2020 casino shutdowns into further evolving and expanding its offerings in the digital realm. 8. Start my Jupyter notebooks (and other tools) immediately

   Right now it takes 2-3 minutes (and sometimes even longer) to start Jupyter and other tools in my Workbench. This is too long and causes loss of productivity. It wuld be good if my tools started right away (few seconds) rather than few minutes.

9. "My Notebooks" menu contents should be different

   Once I am in my workbench, at the top menu, I see "My Notebooks". Its contents should be something like:
   Recent notebooks > {List of three most recent notebooks}
   Create a new notebook > Python/Spark/R

   ...or something like that. I don't think people are likely to choose from the current options of:
   -"Download Everything" (what does this even mean?)
   -"Download All Notebooks"
   -"Logout" (why is this option here?)

    I found it odd to have tutorials under My Notebooks -- since I never created one so I never went there, but I see it now. But something to consider - why not put a link on the main page
